4) MASSACHUSETTS GO ASSOCIATION SUMMER HANDICAP TOURNAMENT.
This will be on July 16th. There will be a ride down for anyone who wants to come with. It will be whole day affair in Boston (Somerville actually), and we will leave Hanover at or around 7.30 to make it in time for registration from 9-10am. The tournament starts at 10am. There will be a four games in all, and should end by about 6 or 7pm. We should be back in Hanover by 9pm or so. The tournament format is similar to ours above. For those of you with new memberships, this will be a good chance to put that membership to use. Note that the MGA tournament is a bit pricier, with a registration fee of $20. However, they give out a cash prize if you place in the top 3. http://www.massgo.org/tournaments.html.

5) GO OUTDOORS.
Since it is the summer, we plan to "go outdoors", assuming it is not raining cats and dogs. There has been interest in having a hike + go event sometime this summer. Basically, we manpack a few go sets and stones and cameras and sandwiches, hike to the top of some hill, play some go, take some pictures, eat some sandwiches, stimulate the mind and body at the same time! Brilliant! Alternatively, we can rent a canoe and play go on the water (although nuclear tesuji will be highly discouraged). It would probably be best to do this on a Saturday. Possible weekends are the 1st (this weekend), the 22nd, and the 29th of July. We probably want to avoid the weekend of the 8th as that is our Border's trip, and the 15th as it conflicts with the MGA tournament. Please e-mail plomp@together.net to let us the weekend of your preference.
Alternatively, we might want to play outside on our regular Saturday meetings, assuming the weather holds.

6) MINI LEAGUES
In the canvas bag in the club closet, you will find tables for running small round robin leagues. We can try to implement this in subsequent meetings.

7) INFO FOR BEGINNERS AND NEW MEMBERS.
The above has been removed from the newsletter and added to the end of the club website on Sensei's Library (http://senseis.xmp.net/?UpperValleyGoClub). New members and beginners should read through the section, it contains instructions on playing with the club online, as well as links to useful websites for beginners to learn the game.

8) HANDICAP TABLE
The club handicap table has been updated and is attached above.

*GAME AND PROBLEMS*

1) This week's game is the first game of the 40th Wangwi finals in Korea, between Lee Changho 9p and Lee Yeongku 5p. Lee Yeongku is an up and coming young professional who is challenging for the Wangwi title, which Lee Changho has held for the last 10 years. It is attached above. The copy of the game record and commentary is taken from http://www.gogameworld.com/. The thing to look out for in this game is the patience and accuracy in positional judgement that Lee Changho exhibits. There are several points in the game where he chose to play a smaller move that is more secure to ensure his win.

2) Problems 3.1 contains the second section of Cho Chikun's "Dictionary of Life and Death", life and death of 6 point shapes in the corner, taken from the stonebase database. These problems are basically an overview of L groups and J groups, or results of various 3-3 point invasions.
